The history of European Roulette

The French mathematician Blaise Pascal first created the Roulette wheel in the 17th century. He was fascinated by perpetual motion devices, which led him to create the 36 number Roulette wheel. In fact, this version of Roulette did not even have a Zero pocket as the initial idea was to create a board game that offered equal chances of winning.

However, everything changed in 1796, a historical date for Roulette history. Indeed, only the King of France and his royal Court were allowed to play up until then. But once the revolution was over, a 37th pocket was added to the Roulette wheel: the Zero! At that time, the game was only accessible to a certain elite and was played exclusively in private clubs and Parisian palaces.

It wasn’t until the 19th century that casinos, as we know them today, started to appear, and in 1842 everything changed rapidly. Charles III was Monarch of Monaco at the time.
